Big Stoney encompasses areas along U.S. 278 (William Hilton Parkway) from the causeway at Jenkins Island to Spanish Wells Road.

• In the early to mid-1900s, Big Stoney was once considered to be Hilton Head Island's downtown area due to the number of entrepreneurs and businesses.
• The community was populated with community stores, the Island's post office, the first consolidated elementary school and other businesses.
• Big Stoney is considered as the gateway to Hilton Head Island because the Island's main thoroughfare comes through this native Islander community.
