About Our Mayor

Mayor John McCann

Mayor McCann has been a member of the Hilton Head Island Town Council since 2012 and was elected as Mayor in November 2018. Prior to becoming mayor, he served as chair of the council's Finance and Administrative Committee, and the Town's Parks and Recreation Commission.

Mayor McCann is a native of Brooklyn, New York, and a graduate of Thomas A. Edison State University. After spending 44 years in the financial industry, Mayor McCann retired as the Chairman/CEO of Bridge Trading, a Reuters Company. He has been on Hilton Head Island for 36 years, including 22 years as a permanent homeowner.

In addition to his service in Town government, Mayor McCann has contributed time to other organizations. He is past president of Port Royal Plantation and past chair of the Technical College of the Lowcountry Foundation.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Mayor McCann enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and American Major League Baseball, especially the New York Yankees.

Role of the Mayor

In the Council-Manager form of government, the Mayor has the same powers and responsibilities granted by law on any member of Council. In addition, he establishes the agenda and serves as the presiding officer at Town Council meetings, represents the Town at official and ceremonial functions; calls special meetings or workshops of Town Council. The mayor also executes all contracts, deeds, ordinances, resolutions, proclamations and other instruments not designated to the Town Manager, after review and approval by Council.
