Spanish Wells Historic Gullah Neighborhood

Spanish Wells is flanked by Calibogue Sound, Old House Creek, and Broad River.

  • This community is named for the Spanish explorers that traveled from Florida and dug freshwater wells along Broad Creek.
  • Gullah people in Spanish Wells were known for fishing, crabbing, and oyster harvesting.
  • The area was the home of Charlie Simmons, Sr., who was well known for his boat that transported people to and from the mainland and for his fishing camp off of Marshland Road.
  • The Spanish Wells Cemetery is located near the Calibogue Sound.
