Grassland Historic Gullah Neighborhood

Grassland encompasses areas along Union Cemetery Road and was in close proximity to the Big Hill historic Gullah community.

  • Grassland was a farming community known for its bounty of watermelon, beans, corn and other crops.
  • The farmers in the community owned large tracts of land, thus making it possible to have successful farming operations.
  • It is home to Union Cemetery, which was once known as Government Cemetery. It served as the burial ground for soldiers who died during the Civil War on Hilton Head Island. Their graves were subsequently moved to the National Cemetery in Beaufort.
