Outdoor Open Burning and Recreational Fires

Learn before you burn!

  • Open burning of yard debris such as leaves, grass and pine straw will only be allowed two days per month. A burn permit is required.
  • Recreational burning is allowed with restrictions.

Types of Open Burning Allowed

Outdoor Cooking

Cooking in an outdoor fixed or portable barbecue, food smoking unit, and outdoor cooking stoves.

Outdoor Fireplaces

Outdoor fireplaces which receive a Town issued building permit and are properly maintained.

Recreational Fires

Fires for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, or other similar purposes.

  • You can burn:
    • natural vegetation (wood, twigs, and pine cones)
    • commercially prepared fireplace logs
    • charcoal
  • You cannot burn:
    • waste lumber
    • garbage

Burning of Yard Waste

Fires for burning yard waste including, but not limited, to grass, tree limbs, branches, leaves, pine straw, pine cones and similar items.

  • A burn permit is required and must be obtained from any Hilton Head Island Fire Station or Fire Rescue Headquarters.

Prohibited Open Burning

Commercial Burning of Debris

Fires for burning yard waste including, but not limited, to grass, tree limbs, branches, leaves, pine straw, pine cones and similar items.

  • Commercial burning of debris such as site clearing or construction waste.

Violations of the burn ordinance are punishable by a fine and fees up to $1087.50 and 30 days in jail.
