Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue (HHIFR):

  • Provides fire suppression, Advance Life Support transport - emergency medical services (EMS), hazardous materials and technical rescue services to the community.
  • Responds to an average of 9,700 calls per year among fire, EMS, and special teams. The majority of HHIFR's emergency calls are medical in nature.
  • Personnel are all trained to a minimum level of Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and approximately 50 percent of our personnel are trained to the paramedic (EMT-P) level certification.
  • Operates a 24 on and 48 hours off three shift system with a minimum staffing level of twenty-nine (29) personnel on duty each day.
  • Operates a 3-person day crew on a 10 hours/day, 4 days/week schedule to support normal staffing during the daytime hours and to cover companies that relocate to our training center.
  • Operates out of 7 fire stations, each with an engine or quint and an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance. A Truck Company and one Battalion Chief fill out the apparatus assignments at the fire stations.
  • Participates in a partnership with a neighboring department in the staffing and management of a Regional Hazard Materials Team and a Regional Urban Search and Rescue Team.
  • Manages our own Enhanced-911 Communications Center, vehicle maintenance facility and provides emergency management for the Town.
  • Focuses on the prevention of fires and life safety through a comprehensive fire inspection and public education program.
  • Fire companies provide ongoing support to our fire prevention efforts by participating in school visits, fire drills, and educational initiatives throughout the community.

A Day in the Life of a Firefighter

In this job, no two days are alike, but each 24-hour shift typically consists of the following:

  • 8 am start time, 8 am end time
  • A thorough check of every apparatus for fully stocked equipment and functionality
  • Fire station cleaning and maintenance
  • Training drills and community events
  • Around-the-clock emergency response. Calls are always #1!
