Town Secures Rights-of-Way to Pave Mitchelville Road

September 20, 2024

Residents along Mitchelville Road will soon benefit from a newly paved roadway.

As part of its Dirt Road Paving Program, the Town of Hilton Head Island has obtained the necessary rights-of-way from property owners along Mitchelville Road. These rights-of-way, or legal permissions granted by property owners, allow the Town to use portions of their land for public infrastructure, such as roads. Property owners can donate these rights-of-way through this program, enabling the Town to construct and maintain public roads indefinitely.

With the rights-of-way now secured, the Town can proceed with designing road plans and obtaining the required permits to pave this section of the road from Fish Haul Road to the dead end. The paving work is expected to begin within the current fiscal year and is funded through the Town's Capital Improvements Program budget.

The Dirt Road Paving Program is part of the Town's 2023-2025 Strategic Action Plan. It aims to improve dirt roads in neighborhoods across the Island, contingent on property owner requests and permissions. The goal is to enhance road quality and ensure safer access for residents and emergency vehicles.
