We offer three distinct pathways to join our Fire Rescue Team.

Step 1. Direct Hire

The direct hire path allows Fire Rescue to recruit applicants who meet the following minimum qualifications:

IFSAC/ProBoard Firefighter II
National Registry EMT

The Direct Hire application process remains continually open.

Applicants received through this process will be contacted to participate in the Firefighter Candidate Physical Abilities Assessment (FCPAA) and panel interview.
FCPAA and interviews will be scheduled as soon as practical.
No written test will be required.

Step 2. Hiring Pool

We also maintain a hiring pool to fill Firefighter / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) / Paramedic vacancies.

The hiring pool selection process creates a pool of applicants, including both non-certified and partially certified candidates, from which jobs are filled.

The frequency of refreshing our hiring pool is based on the needs of the department (typically annually in mid to late spring).

Step 3. SkillBridge Program

This Department of Defense program provides training and work experience for service members nearing the end of their enlistment while also allowing the Town the opportunity to train and evaluate the service member's suitability for potential work.

SkillBridge participants of the Town of Hilton Head Island Firefighter Program must either meet the Direct Hire criteria at the end of their SkillBridge assignment or participate in the next available hiring pool to be eligible for full time employment.
