Traffic safety improvements coming to Gumtree Road, Mathews Drive, and Squire Pope Road

The Town of Hilton Head Island will begin construction on traffic safety improvements along Gumtree Road, Mathews Drive and Squire Pope Road. Work is scheduled to begin on June 3 and will continue intermittently through July 31.

The project will include new pavement markings at all crosswalks, milling and paving to remove the pavement patterns as needed, adjustment of signs to meet standards, and the addition of crosswalk signs as needed.

All work will occur overnight from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize traffic disruption and will take place on the following dates:

• June 3-6
• June 9-13
• July 20-24
• July 27-31

During this time, some nighttime lane closures on each road will be required. 

Pedestrians and motorists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through the work area. The community is also asked to exercise patience as the Town works to enhance safety and improve traffic flow in this area.
