Beginning this week, the Town of Hilton Head Island's Facilities Department will start work on landscape enhancements at the northeast corner of William Hilton Parkway and Squire Pope Road.
"This project embodies our Town’s core values—environmental sustainability, historical preservation, interconnected pathways, and the creation of beautiful, inviting spaces for our community. Our residents and every visitor to Hilton Head Island pass through this intersection, and until recently, they may not have fully appreciated the magnificent oaks that stand there," said Hilton Head Island Mayor Alan Perry.
"With the planned enhancements, this gateway will offer a picturesque and welcoming view for all to enjoy," Perry added.
"This project will celebrate the beauty and history of the property and Stoney neighborhood right at the intersection. It is home to two majestic live oak trees that have stood for hundreds of years, and this work will help sustain them," said Derrick Coaxum, Town of Hilton Head Island facilities director. With these iconic oak trees as the centerpiece, the project will include:
The initiative is a continuation of tree maintenance work the Town started last November to enhance visibility, improve the safety and appearance of public spaces, and celebrate the historical significance of the live oak trees, which are approximately 400 to 500 years old.
This project reflects the island’s commitment to preserving its rich history while enhancing the experience for residents and visitors alike, Coaxum said. The project will take up to 30 days to complete, pending any inclement weather.
