Town Buys Former Aunt Chilada’s Café Property

The Town of Hilton Head Island acquired a 1.29-acre site at 69 Pope Avenue for $2.9 million. Originally built in 1977, the property was previously home to Aunt Chilada’s Easy Street Café.

The Town finalized the purchase in mid-October, aiming to manage future use of the site. The acquisition was funded through tax increment financing (TIF) generated from the Pope Avenue TIF district, which is designated to support redevelopment and improvements in the area.

With its proximity to Coligny Beach and Lowcountry Celebration Park, the property is envisioned as a potential site for public parking and open space. It will help support nearby businesses, accommodate beach visitors, and further enhance the Town’s public facilities through this investment. The Town will keep the public updated as plans for the property progress.

"As we work towards creative solutions to address parking needs on the Island’s South end, this space will be central to our redevelopment strategy," said Mayor Alan Perry. "The Aunt Chilada’s site expands the Town’s presence and investment along this corridor and supports our planning for the Island’s future."
