Town Starts Pedestrian Safety Enhancements Along William Hilton Parkway

September 11, 2024

The Town of Hilton Head will begin making enhancements to improve pedestrian safety along William Hilton Parkway between Beach City and Dillon roads.  Construction is scheduled to start on Wednesday, September. 11, and will continue through Thursday, October 31.

Key improvements include lowering the speed limit from 45 mph to 40 mph, upgrading crosswalks, placing and updating pavement markings, installing low-level pathway lighting, adding landscaping and updating signage.  All upgrades will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act so persons with disabilities are also able to safely navigate the area.

This project will unfold in multiple phases, with the first phase taking place from September 11 through September 18 at the intersections of William Hilton Parkway with Palmetto Parkway and Northridge Drive. During this phase, foundations for rectangular pedestrian crossing signs with rapid flashing beacons will be installed. These beacons are designed to increase pedestrian visibility and improve driver awareness at marked crosswalks without traffic control signals.

While lane closures are not required, some pathways will be partially closed to accommodate the construction work. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through the work area.

The project is made possible through an intergovernmental agreement between the Town and Beaufort County to make safety improvements along this segment of William Hilton Parkway and Palmetto Bay Road.  It is funded through the Town's Capital Improvement Program, including a $600,000 grant from the County.
