Town Provides Guidance for Election/Campaign Signs Placement

 As the November 5th general election approaches, the Town of Hilton Head Island is reminding political candidates and their supporters to adhere to the regulations regarding the placement of campaign signs.

To ensure the public’s safety while allowing candidates to communicate directly with residents, the following rules must be observed when placing campaign or other politically related signs. According to Section 57-25-10 of the South Carolina Code of Laws and Section 16-5-114 of the Town’s Municipal Code, political signs:

• Must not be placed on any public property. This includes all parks and beach park facilities.
• May be placed on private property (residential or commercial) with the property owner's consent.
• Must not be placed within any public road rights-of-way; this typically extends from the pavement up to areas just beyond any stormwater ditches or multiuse pathways that run along most roads.
• Should not be installed in any way that might obstruct or impair a driver's view or create a safety hazard.

After the election, all campaign signs are requested to be promptly removed.

In this general election cycle, Hilton Head Island will hold municipal elections for Wards 1, 3, and 6. Citizens interested in running for one of these wards have until noon Thursday, August 15th, to file their candidacy at Town Hall, located at 1 Town Center Court. Town administrative offices are open from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday-Friday.
