Honoring Juneteenth: Town Administrative Offices to be Closed on June 19

June 14, 2024

In honor of Juneteenth, the Town of Hilton Head Island administrative offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. The offices will reopen for regular business hours at 8 a.m. on Thursday, June 20.

Town emergency services will remain available during the holiday.

About Juneteenth

Juneteenth, originating from June 19, is a federal holiday commemorating the liberation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Also recognized as Freedom Day, it was established as a federal holiday in June 2021. The Hilton Head Island Town Council formally adopted the holiday for observance on June 7, 2022.

Local activities celebrating Juneteenth are taking place at the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, 40 Harriet Tubman Way, and are open to the public.

Drum Circle

Friday, June 14, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm

Participants of all ages are invited to join a powerful communal drumming experience led by skilled drummers.

10th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Saturday, June 15, from 10:30 am to 4 pm

Celebrate "Where Freedom Began" with a full day of activities, including live music, vendors, food, and other fun activities. There will be performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Quiana Parler and the legendary R&B group, the S.O.S. Band.
