Recycle Your Natural Christmas Trees and Let Go of the Holiday Lights

December 21, 2022

When the holidays are over and you’re wondering what to do with your Christmas tree and holiday lights, think about recycling them.

Right after Christmas, the Town of Hilton Head Island will host its 12th annual Grinding of the Greens program to recycle natural Christmas trees into mulch. For the first time, holiday lights will also be accepted for recycling.  Recycling services for both trees and lights will be available at the following drop-off locations from Monday, December 26, 2022, through Sunday, January 15, 2023:

Natural Tree Recycling
Make sure to prepare your tree for grinding by removing all ornaments, lights, and garland to ensure the resulting mulch is clean. When the grinding is complete, all are welcome to stop by and pick up free mulch starting Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Mulch will be available until Monday, January 23, or until it is gone. Last year, approximately 200 trees were dropped off and ground into mulch.

Holiday Lights Recycling
The Outside Foundation, a local non-profit, is coordinating the collection of holiday lights for recycling. Light collection bins will be clearly marked "recycled lights only." After the collection is complete, bins containing the lights will be shipped to a recycler.
