Town Council Adopts Strategic Plan for Office of Cultural Affairs

December 7, 2021

The Hilton Head Island Town Council voted unanimously to adopt a strategic plan that guides the work of the Town's Office of Cultural Affairs, including initiatives to promote art and culture organizations and enhance quality of life for the community as a whole.

Tuesday's vote follows two other Town Council actions regarding the plan - an initial approval in September and a vote to rescind the plan in October after concerns were raised about the plan’s professional development curriculum.

"From time to time, Town Council has to step back and evaluate its own actions. This was one of those times. We took the opportunity to do a more thorough review of Office of Cultural Affairs strategic plan and offered suggestions to address areas where additional information was needed," said Mayor John McCann.

"The Arts Council is pleased that the revised plan is now a part of the overall Town Strategic Plan. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the Office of Cultural Affairs to grow the arts and cultural community, make a significant contribution to the Island’s economy and deliver an excellent quality of life to residents and guests," said Jane Joseph, chairperson for the Arts Council of Hilton Head.

"The adoption of this plan will provide clear direction and support for the Office of Cultural Affairs during the next three years. I look forward to implementing the strategies outlined in it and providing opportunities for the public to see and be exposed to Hilton Head Island through the lens of arts and culture," said Jenn McEwen, director of the Town’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

The strategic plan includes goals, strategies and tactics for several initiatives such as public art, the annual Crescendo event, historic sites and cultural preservation, and heritage tourism. A copy of the plan will be available on the Town's website at hiltonheadislandsc.gov, and the OCA's website at culturehhi.org.
