Hilton Head Island-Based Wood and Partners Inc. Chosen to Lead Design Services for Parks Improvements

August 18, 2021

The Town of Hilton Head Island announces the selection of Wood and Partners Inc., to master plan Chaplin Community Park and Crossings Park, two of its recreational properties that are staples for baseball and softball games, soccer match ups and other events.

The Wood and Partners Inc.- led team including Design Workshop, Watson Tate Savory, Thomas and Hutton, and Newkirk Environmental met the requirements the Town sought for this project. Consultants will kick off the projects next week with workshops and a community engagement session:

Town Council Workshop
Monday, August 23 at 11 am
Stephen G. Riley Municipal Complex (Town Hall), 1 Town Center Court. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the workshop will also be streamed live on the Town's public meeting Facebook page.

Open Park Day Drop-in for the Community
Monday, August 23 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm
Chaplin Community Park, 21 Castnet Drive

Parks and Recreation Commission Workshop
Tuesday, August 24, at 10 am at Town Hall

Members of the public who plan to attend the in-person meetings at Town Hall are required to wear face covering or mask in Town buildings.

The project calls for preparation of plans for reimagining Chaplin Community Park and the redevelopment of Crossings Park, 4 Haig Point Circle, as a dedicated baseball and softball sports park with expanded community amenities. This is consistent with recommendations for the parks from the recently adopted Parks and Recreation Master Plan and Our Plan.

"These are two of our most used recreational parks. The work we are planning for them are major capital projects that will invigorate the Town’s parks and recreation system," said Mayor John McCann.

"We have a community of youths and adults who enjoy every opportunity to be outdoors and engage in sports activities. As recreational sports expand in our community, we want to be prepared to accommodate them and provide amenities such as parking, pet areas, and restrooms that go along with our extensively used parks. As these park facilities are reimagined and work gets  underway, they will lead to enhanced developments in the area" said Town Manager Marc Orlando.

"This is a very exciting time for the Island’s parks and recreation community, which has been dedicated to the master planning process for several years," said Taylor Ladd, Project Planner for the Town. "We are looking forward to working with an exceptional team to revitalize two parks that have served our community well and have great potential to further our vision for best-in-class parks and recreation."
