SkillBridge Program

The Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge program provides an opportunity for Service members to gain civilian work experience and bridge the gap between the end of service and the beginning of their civilian careers. This program provides training and work experience while also allowing employers the opportunity to train and evaluate the Service member's suitability for work.

• Service members can be granted up to 180 days of permissive duty to focus solely on full-time, approved training.
• SkillBridge participants continue to receive their military compensation and benefits, while the employer provides practical training and valuable work experience.

Town of Hilton Head Island SkillBridge Program Opportunities

The Town's SkillBridge program currently provides training to prepare individuals for a job as a Firefighter/EMT.

Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue is dedicated to serving the community with outstanding customer service and timely emergency response services including fire suppression, Advance Life Support transport - emergency medical services (EMS), hazardous materials and technical rescue services.

While participation in the SkillBridge program does not guarantee employment at the end of the program, it does provide valuable training for those wishing to pursue a career in Fire Services.

The Town welcomes both experienced and inexperienced candidates.

• We look for NFPA 1002 Firefighter Level II certification from a Fire Academy such as South Carolina Fire Academy, that provides an IFSAC or ProBoard credential seal.
• We require our firefighters to be certified to National Registry EMT Basics (NREMT-B) and are proud that approximately 50 percent of our members have advanced training to the paramedic (EMT-P) level certification.

While we will make every effort to accommodate SkillBridge requests, please be aware that that the SC Fire Academy conducts classes on a quarterly basis and we are limited to a specific number of candidates for each session. This along with the time of your end of enlistment may create certain challenges. We will do our best to address requests on a case-by-case review.
