The Town of Hilton Head Island on Tuesday announced the acquisition of a 4.57 acre tract that was once the site of a car dealership for $3.65 million.

“We have been interested in this parcel for quite some time and finally reached an agreement.  We will use proceeds from prior land sales to buy the land, which has been vacant for many years,” said Town Manager Steve Riley.  Formerly, the site housed Modern Classic Motors.  It is bordered by William Hilton Parkway (U.S. 278) and Main Street.

Riley said future plans call for closing a curb cut that was used as an entry to the property from William Hilton Parkway, abandoning right-of-way access at Automobile Place that is adjacent to the property, creating additional green space along U.S. 278, and selling a portion of it for appropriate development.  “Acquiring this property gives us the ability to reduce curb cuts along, and beautify a portion of, William Hilton Parkway,” Riley said.

Mayor John McCann said that in addition to the benefits of improved traffic flow and continued beautification on its main road, “the Town intends to impose a 100 foot setback from US 278 and gains the opportunity to guide the future use of this important parcel for the benefit of the community and our local economy.“

With today’s acquisition, the Town’s inventory of land includes 145 parcels totaling 1,301.99 acres, with a total expenditure of $175.45 million.
