Hilton Head Island Town Manager Steve Riley announced the Town has received its first reimbursement check from FEMA totaling $1,316,019. This is a significant step in the Town's recovery from Hurricane Matthew. The Town has spent in excess of $46 million on the hurricane response to date, with a total expected cost to be in excess of $66 million. The Town has worked closely with FEMA since the hurricane to secure federal reimbursements where eligible. Current expectations for the Town include $38 million in eventual federal reimbursements.

The State of South Carolina has also approved some state funding participation for the Town, but the amounts are yet to be finalized. The Town has used its disaster and other reserves along with a $20 million short-term note to finance the response efforts.

The Town will continue to provide documentation and information to FEMA and the State as the reimbursement requests work their way through the federal and state approval process.
