The Town of Hilton Head Island, by order of the Fire Chief, will be prohibiting recreational burning until further notice within the incorporated limits of the Town Effective 7:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014 until further notice.

This decision is based upon a Red Flag Fire Alert that has been issued by the South Carolina Forestry Commission for the entire state.

Weather conditions, which include sustained winds (20 to 30 mph), wind gusts (30 to 40+ mph), dry fuels, and low relative humidity, contribute to an elevated fire danger level.

The public is strongly encouraged to honor this ban as violations of the ban may result in fines up to $1092.50. The weather forecast suggests that conditions may moderate on Sunday. Officials will continually evaluate the situation over the weekend. This alert remains in effect until lifted by the South Carolina Forestry Commission and the Town of Hilton Head Island.
