Hilton Head Island, S.C. – A contractor for the Town of Hilton Head Island will be installing traffic signal heads on the mast arms of the new South Forest Beach pedestrian HAWK signal from Friday, March 27 through Saturday, March 28.

The acronym HAWK stands for High intensity Activated cross WalK. The HAWK crosswalk is a unique design and has proven to be safer and more effective than conventional crosswalk designs.

Minor traffic delays may occur on South Forest Beach Drive between Coligny Circle and the beach parking lot during this time while crews install the signal heads and signs for this new pedestrian signal, which will serve a relocated crosswalk on South Forest Beach Drive.

From Monday, March 30, through Saturday, April 4, South Forest Beach Drive will be closed for construction for asphalt demolition and new curbed landscaped medians on South Forest Beach Drive. South Forest Beach Drive will be closed in the northeast direction from the Holiday Inn / Beach House entrance to Coligny Circle.

Any motorists needing to travel from South Forest Beach Drive to Pope Avenue will need to detour through Deallyon Avenue to Cordillo Parkway. The left hand lane of South Forest Beach Drive in the southwest direction heading from Coligny Circle toward the Coligny beach parking lot will be closed during this time frame also. All motorists exiting Coligny Circle to South Forest Beach Drive will need to exit through the right lane.

Traffic will be controlled through the work zone via signs, traffic control devices and flaggers. Please use caution when traveling in this area. For more information, contact Jennifer Lyle at jenniferl@hiltonheadislandsc.gov or 843-341-4779.
