I want to update you on what the Town of Hilton Head Island is doing to protect residents and visitors against the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

While we do not have a confirmed case of COVID-19 on Hilton Head Island, we are taking the necessary precautions to keep residents and visitors safe and prevent the spread of the disease.

COVID-19 has affected some communities in South Carolina and nearby in Georgia. With Hilton Head Island being a top destination, it is likely we could also be affected by this pandemic. I know the presence of the disease in our state creates concern for you - our residents, our workforce and our visitors.

That's why our emergency management team is diligently monitoring the situation along with the S.C. health department and taking all the precautionary steps to deal with this global crisis. As we receive updates, we will continue to pass information along to you.

First responders in our community are adhering to the latest medical information advice and following the guidance of CDC and public health officials on all issues regarding safety and virus transmission for themselves and our residents.

In support of our first responders, we have made the decision to limit the availability of these individuals to emergency services related calls only. As such, they will not be available to support special events and non-emergency related community activities.

This action by no means that any event or planned activity cannot or should not continue to operate as normal. The organizers, however, will need to determine what impacts, if any, this action may have on their capacity to host and operate them.

In this time of uncertainty, it is important for us to be safe and informed. We advise you to visit the CDC and South Carolina DHEC websites for the latest and most reliable information about COVID-19.

More importantly, we ask that you heed CDC recommendations and take specific individual actions to reduce the spread of this virus:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • And Stay home if you are sick.

You can also find these recommendation on the Town's website at www.hiltonheadislandsc.gov.

This is a time for our community to focus on protecting our health.

We must work together to protect those in our community who are most at risk of severe disease, particularly the elderly. Check on your neighbors, family members and friends to make sure they are okay. Lend a hand if they need any assistance.

We are a great community filled with warm, compassionate people. Let’s continue to demonstrate that by showing our concern, not only for ourselves, but for others.

Thank you for helping to keep yourself and our community healthy and well!
