Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Hilton Head Island Mayor John McCann has been invited to The White House to attend a reception honoring President Sergio Mattarella of Italy and his wife, first lady Laura Mattarella.

Hosted by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, the reception will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, October 16. McCann received the official invitation to attend the reception about a week and a half ago.

The invitation to McCann was extended as part of the Friendship City Pact the Town of Hilton Head Island recently signed with the city of Verona, Italy.  McCann, along with Town Manager Steve Riley and members of the Italian-American Club of Hilton Head Island, flew to Verona in June to meet city officials and formally sign the agreement – the first step in the process towards a Sister City pact. The pact helps create an exchange of ideas between cities on arts and culture, business and trade, community development and youth and education.

“We’re thrilled to continue developing our relationship with Italy. This is an exciting opportunity to welcome and meet President and first lady Mattarella and keep our exchange of ideas open,” McCann said.

The Town will pay for McCann to fly coach accommodations to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. He will be accompanied by his daughter, who will be covering her own expenses.
