US 278 Shelter Cove Area Pathway Project

Project Description

New permeable asphalt multi-use pathway along US 278 connecting the gap between other pathways in the Shelter Cove area. Project extends from the Hickory Tavern down to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office along eastbound William Hilton Parkway. The project includes new crosswalks and pedestrian signal phasing for the existing signal at Shelter Cove Lane and substantial storm water upgrades.

Project Objectives

To provide pathway connectivity in the area, enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and improve storm drainage in the area.

Project Updates
  • 10/10/2019 - Project is nearing completion. The remaining portion of the new pathway is expected to be open to travel by 10/18/2019, weather permitting.
  • 9/25/2019 - The right turn lane from Shelter Cove Lane ONTO US 278 at the traffic signal between Kroger’s and Hickory Tavern will be temporarily closed 7 am - 11 am and intermittently closed as needed between 1:30 pm and 4 pm on both Thursday and Friday, September 26th and 27th. This is to allow the Town’s contractor to construct pedestrian crosswalk and pathway safety improvements in the area. Traffic will be controlled via flaggers and traffic control devices. Please use extra caution and patience if exiting onto US 278 in this area during these timeframes.
  • 6/27/2019 - Contractor is installing the stone reservoir base between the Plaza entrance at Whole Foods and Shelter Cove Lane at the BC Sheriff’s office. Paving of this portion of the pathway is expected between July 1 and 12.
  • 5/31/2019 - The contractor has completed the underground storm water portion of the project and cleared vegetation from the right of way.

    Starting on Monday June 3rd they will be placing curb and gutter along the right turn lane into the Mall in front of Hickory Tavern. Placement of the curb and gutter should last until Wednesday, weather permitting.

  • 5/8/2019 - News Release - William Hilton Parkway (Eastbound) Right Turn Lane at Shelter Cove Lane Traffic Signal To be Closed for Pathway Work, May 9 - May 13
    As part of the Town of Hilton Head Island's pathway project on eastbound William Hilton Parkway near Shelter Cove, crews must temporarily close the right turn lane in front of the Hickory Tavern to install new underground storm drainage pipes. The lane closure is scheduled to occur from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 9; Friday, May 10 and Monday, May 13.
