Town Manager Video Update July 20, 2017 Transcript

Hi. I'm Steve Riley Hilton Head Island Town Manager. I am standing at our site at Leg O'Mutton Road near Gardner Drive. Where we've got the kind of piles of debris that we have all been very sick of seeing for a long time. The kind of piles that we are grateful have not been in our neighborhoods and on our front yards for many many months. But we do still have landscaping debris that we continue to pick up and process. Not from our roads, from our drainage ditches. They suffered a great deal of damage during Hurricane Matthew and we understand how important it is that we get this cleaned up, as we are in the midst of an early part of the next hurricane season, the current hurricane season. We have started at the outfall where the water, where the creeks and drainage ditches enter the water bodies and we are working our way up straight. We have pump stations and all of them are repaired and in good working order and we continue to bring stuff out, bring it to the site, process it, as we try to be ready for that next storm that we hope frankly doesn't come. If you're at the way upstream I know you're frustrated that we haven't cleaned out the ditches yet, but if we go upstream first we exacerbate the downstream problems if if blockages are still there. So we start at the bottom and work our way upstream. We are well underway or crews are working 6 and 7 days a week. We hope that by the end of August is our expectation that every ditch will have been addressed, we will have brought the debris here, will process it and gotten it out of out of sight and out of mind. We appreciate your patience and your understanding and know that we are ready if Mother Nature should visit us again. Thanks.
