Outdoor Burning Prohibited

Release Date: July 6, 2011

Joheida Fister email icon , Fire Marshal, (843)682-5140

The Town of Hilton Head Island, by order of the Fire Chief, will be prohibiting outdoor open burning until further notice within the Corporate limits of the Town. Outdoor open burning includes residential open burning for the purpose of disposing of vegetation (yard debris) and recreational fires for the purposes of pleasure, religious ceremonial or other similar purposes. No burning permits will be issued until such time as the ban is lifted.

This decision is based upon multiple factors which include an advisory Red Flag Fire Alert issued by the SC Forestry Commission on July 5th  and the US drought monitor http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/DM_southeast.htm classifying our area in extreme drought.

The extreme dry conditions make the island more susceptible to intense and fast spreading fires. Even with the occasional rain, outdoor burning could become difficult to control. The public is strongly encouraged to honor this ban as violations of the ban may result in fines up to $1092.50.

For questions concerning outdoor open burning please contact the Bureau of Fire Prevention at 843-682-5145.
