There will be temporary lane closures on Mathews Drive between US 278 and Palmetto Parkway on Wednesday, June 15, to all allow for the construction of new pedestrian crosswalks. These closures will occur at three locations and should only cause temporary delays, as traffic will be flagged around the work areas.
A single cross walk on Beach City Road, located on the western (US 278) side of the new roundabout, will also be constructed on the 15th. This work will require Beach City Road to be closed to through traffic at this location from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Motorists should use alternate routes and avoid this area during these work hours.
The work will consist of heating, imprinting, and coating the existing asphalt at proposed cross walks. This work is part of the Town of Hilton Head Island's Mathews Drive Pathway Project which connects to the existing pathways along US 278 and Beach City Road. Traffic will be controlled through the work zone via signs, traffic control devices, and flagmen. If you would like to learn more about the project, you may contact Jennifer Lyle at
