The Town of Hilton Head Island is pleased to announce the League of American Bicyclists has awarded the coveted Bicycle Friendly Community award at the silver level to the Town.
This is a tremendous accomplishment for the community and reflects the decades of investment in pathways, safety initiatives, and infrastructure activities to support residents and the nearly 1 million people who bike yearly on the island. The preparation and submission of the application was a collaborative effort by members of town staff, the chamber of commerce and community bicycle advocates. Receiving the silver level award is especially notable. The Town of Hilton Head Island is now the highest ranked Bicycle Friendly Community in South Carolina.
Later this summer a special ceremony will be scheduled with representatives from the League of American Bicyclists to present this prestigious award and thank all those who have worked tirelessly to promote bicycling on Hilton Head Island.
According to the League of American Bicyclists, this most recent round of applications was one of the strongest groups of applicants they've seen with a lot of solid projects and programs from communities all across the country. Twenty-one communities received awards, out of 45 new applicants.
To date, the League of American Bicyclists has received 452 applications and designated 179 Bicycle Friendly Communities in 44 states. The Bicycle Friendly Community program recognizes communities that promote bicycling.
