The Town of Hilton Head Island reports that the subject traffic signal was struck by lightning at approximately 3:15 p.m. this afternoon, resulting in severe damage to the signal's control cabinet. Town of Hilton Head Island officials worked with emergency personnel dispatched from Charleston until late in the evening before determining that the damage will require the replacement of the signal's control cabinet. This repair has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., and the signal will be in flashing operation until that time.
The Town has apprised the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office of the situation, and uniformed deputies are planning to direct traffic manually tomorrow during the peak traffic volume hours from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., and again from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. Deputies will again direct traffic at the intersection beginning at 7:00 p.m. while the cabinet is replaced, as electrical service for the signal will be interrupted during this time. It is anticipated that the signal will be restored to operation by approximately 8:30 p.m.
