Town of Hilton Head Island Receives Google eCity Award for South Carolina
Google recognizes the strongest online business community in each state

Google has named The Town of Hilton Head Island as the 2015 eCity of the State of South Carolina. The eCity Awards recognize the strongest online business community in each state—the digital capitals of America.  These cities' businesses are embracing the web to find new customers, connect with existing clients, and fuel their local economies.

"We're proud to recognize this growing entrepreneurial spirit—and the role that it plays in both creating jobs and sustaining local economies," said Emily Harris, Marketing Manager for Google's Let's Put Our Cities on the Map program. "With 97 percent of Internet users looking for products and services online, it’s clear that success is about being connected."

Town of Hilton Head Island Mayor David Bennett agrees that the Google recognition affirms the attractiveness of Hilton Head Island to technology-based businesses. "Our economic development strategy targets the principals of companies that, because of technology, can be located wherever the business owner wishes to live. This award demonstrates that the Town is well-positioned to successfully compete for these types of companies."

The Google eCity designation is the second recent information technology-related accolade the Town of Hilton Head Island has received. "The Town was recently named one of four South Carolina Certified Connected Communities by Connect SC," said Jim Collett, Chair of the Hilton Head Island Information Technology Task Force. "The Google eCity designation is a further validation of Hilton Head Island as an Internet leader."

Maryann Bastnagel, Hilton Head Island Economic Development Corporation Chair, echoed Mayor Bennett’s sentiments. "I run a technology consulting business from Hilton Head Island. I have local clients, but I also work nationally and internationally. My husband and I are here because this is where we want to live. The Hilton Head Island Economic Development Corporation is successfully working across multiple fronts to position the Town of Hilton Head Island as an attractive location for technology-based enterprises."

Google worked with an independent research firm IPSOS to analyze the online strength of local small businesses in cities in all fifty states. The city with the highest scores in each state was designated a Google eCity.
