Two Hilton Head Island Firefighters recently graduated from Paramedic training held at Rescue Training, Inc. in Savannah, GA. Fire Apparatus Operator Steve Kenyon and Firefighter Landon Terhune successfully completed a concentrated eight-month training program that will allow them to test for South Carolina and National Registry Paramedic certification. In addition to the classwork, the students completed numerous clinical rotations at local hospitals and with local Fire/Rescue and EMS agencies.

The new paramedics will now complete an internal 2-3 month skills development program under the guidance of a senior paramedic within the department. This program covers field training, local EMS protocols, and advanced skills assessments under the supervision of the department’s Medical Control physicians.

Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue provides Advance Life Support (ALS) EMS service to the community. The department responded to over 5000 EMS incidents in 2015. Fire Rescue provides paramedic coverage by cross-staffing all fire and EMS apparatus at the Island’s 7 Fire Stations.
