Filing for the Town of Hilton Head Island Mayor's race and the Town Council races for Wards 2 (Harkins) ,4 (Safay) & 5 (Williams) will open on August 2 and close at noon on August 16. The filing fee is $50.00 for Mayor and $35.00 for Town Council.
The general election is November 2nd, with a runoff two weeks later, November 16th, if necessary. The winning candidates must receive 50% of the votes cast plus one vote. If no one receives a majority, a runoff will be held between the top two candidates and the one receiving a majority will be the winner. Town elections are non-partisan and no party affiliation is placed on the ballot.
Candidates must fill out a Statement of Candidacy as well as two forms from the State Ethics Commission: the Statement of Economic Interest and the Campaign Disclosure Form. During the filing period, the candidates shall turn in the filing fee and forms to the Town Clerk's office during regular business hours. In order to run, candidates for Town Council must reside within their wards and candidates for Mayor must live within the Town limits. There is no age or length of residency requirement but all candidates must be registered voters.
Candidates may pick up the filing packet in the Town Clerk's office located at Town Hall any time prior to the filing period.
