The Town of Hilton Head Island today announced the acquisition of an additional parcel of land from the Children's Center, Inc. totaling .68 of an acre for a total expenditure of $16,000.00. The Town will use proceeds from the Town's 2010 Bond Issue.
The parcel is located along Gardner Drive and is adjacent to other Town-owned property. The land is zoned PD-1, Planned Development Mixed Use District, which would have allowed 13,600 square feet of commercial development, generating 188 PM peak-hour driving trips.
Town Manager Steve Riley stated, "This land was acquired by the Children's Center in 2003 as part of their original plan to relocate from their Mathews Drive location, but these plans were abandoned after the Children's Center worked out a deal with the Town to relocate to their current site on Nature's Way. Thus, the Children's Center no longer needs the parcel and put it up for sale."
Mayor Drew Laughlin added, "This land will provide the Town improved access to its adjoining parcels should the Town decide to create some limited use of its land such as a passive park."
Today's acquisition pushed the program inventory to 142 parcels totaling 1,318.65 acres, with a total expenditure of $168.1 million. Taken together, these parcels have resulted in a reduction of 4.57 million square feet of commercial development, 1,365 motel rooms, 4,637 residential and timeshare units, and the preclusion of 43,228 PM peak-hour driving trips.
