The Town of Hilton Head Island today announced that it has partnered with Beaufort County to fund a portion of the cost of the acquisition of two parcels of land from BDC Capital, Inc. totaling 1.52 acres for a total expenditure of $350,000.00. The Town will contribute $102,000.00 toward the purchase price. The Town's portion will come from the Town’s 2010 Bond Issue.
The parcels are located along Beach City Road and are adjacent to other Town-owned property (Fish Haul Creek Park). The two parcels are zoned WMU, Waterfront Mixed Use, which would have allowed 12,102 square feet of commercial development, generating 419 PM peak-hour driving trips.
Mayor Drew Laughlin stated, "This land will provide a natural buffer for Fish Haul Creek Park and a possible location for Mitchelville Preservation efforts. We are pleased to be able to partner with the County on these important acquisitions."
Town Manager Steve Riley added, "The acquisition of these two parcels, along with others adjacent to the property, offers the opportunity to create open space along this corridor of the Island and at the head waters of Fish Haul Creek."
Today's acquisition pushed the program inventory to 138 parcels totaling 1,204.75 acres, with a total expenditure of $162.4 million. Taken together, these parcels have resulted in a reduction of 4.55 million square feet of commercial development, 1,365 motel rooms, 4,597 residential and timeshare units, and the preclusion of 42,815 PM peak-hour driving trips.
