Voter Registration Services for Beaufort County

Registering to vote allows you to have a say in the way our government works. Being a voting member of our community assures that you have a say in who represents you in local, county, state and nationally elected offices. Your vote is your voice on important issues. The Beaufort County Board of Elections and Registrationexternal link icon handles all voter registration tasks for Beaufort County. Absentee voting and voter registration services are no longer provided by the Town of Hilton Head Island.

To register to vote you must:
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Be 18 years of age or will become 18 before the next election.
  • Be a permanent resident of the state of South Carolina.
  • Be a permanent resident of the county and voting precinct in which you wish to vote.
  • Not be under a court order declaring you mentally incompetent.
  • Not be confined in any public prison resulting from a conviction of a crime.
  • Have never been convicted of a felony or offense against the election laws OR if previously convicted, have served the entire sentence, including probation and parole, or have received a pardon for the conviction.

Registration is closed for thirty days prior to any election. The last day to register to vote in any election is the 31st day prior to the election.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a waiting period before one can register to vote after moving to South Carolina?
No, you may register to vote immediately in person or by mail, but you must be registered at least 30 days prior to an election in the precinct where you wish to vote.

Do I have to specify or declare a party preference?
No, you do not have to specify a party when registering to vote. During a primary election, a voter can participate in either party's primary; however, you can only vote in one primary for a particular election.

Where will I go to vote?
The voter registration certificate you will receive will contain the name of your voting place.

Why do I have to give my social security number?
South Carolina law requires anyone wishing to register to vote disclose their Social Security Number. Social Security Number is used for identification purposes only. It is not released by the County Boards of Voter Registration or State Election Commission.

I have lost my voter registration card, will I need it in order to vote?
It is not necessary to have your voter registration card with you when you go to the poll to vote; however, you must have either a valid South Carolina. Driver's License or identification card issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles. The address on the Driver's License or identification card must be the same as on the voter registration list.
